Rose bed

Starting to weed around the only Rose in the Rose bed which has not been pruned this spring. The Rose was surrounded by Green-headed Coneflowers [Rudbeckia laciniata]. Removed 2 large garbage bags-full of these plants. There is still a lot more Green-headed Coneflowers left in the Rose bed.

While I was doing this, Sharon was removing Pokeweeds [Phytolacca americana] in the Butterfly Bush bed, painting their roots with ... and then weeding around the areas around the former Pokeweeds.

Gardening Diary – April 27, 2024

 Dappled Willow (before pruning)

The Dappled Willow at the right side of the back garden “exploded” in growth this past month! We decided to prune this plant since it was interfering with our access into the back garden and was hanging over into our neighbors’ yard.

While I was pruning the Dappled Willow, Sharon was digging up the Dock Weed [Rumex obtusifolia​] from the right side of the garden near me.

After I finished pruning the Dappled Willow, Sharon and I pruned the Cardinal Red Twig Dogwood [Cornus sericea] that was next to the Dappled Willow that I was pruning.

We pruned a few branches off the Java Red Weigela [Weigela florida 'Java Red'].

We then started to weed around the Hardy Bensonhurst Purple Fig Tree [Ficus carica] near the latter plants.

Sharon and I planted 6 Undaunted® Ruby Muhly Grasses [Muhlenbergia reverchonii ‘PUND01S’] in the right side of the front yard.

Doublet® Red Begonia

Then we planted 6 Doublet® Red Begonias [Begonia semperflorens 'Doublet Red'] in the Flowering Cherry bed.

Watered both beds.

Gardening Diary – April 11, 2024

 After pondering the pro’s and con’s of fixing the backflow device for the irrigation system, finally decided to forgo fixing it. Since we had decided last year to remove the vegetable raised beds and to change focus to the maintaining of primarily bushes and trees in the backyard, the need for an irrigation system is no longer cost nor labor effective especially at our age.

When we contacted KUB about removing the blackflow device, their representative said that we needed to send them a picture showing the blackflow device no longer connected to the system and remove the irrigation system. Today, took the required picture and forwarded it to KUB.
