Gardening Diary – April 29, 2023

 

Right fence bed.

Started to weed the right fence bed. Within the past week, with some heavy rain, the weeds have really grown.

Bridal Veil Astilbe

Planted one of the Astilbes, Bridal Veil Astilbe, that we purchased yesterday at ???. Found that the soil appears to be fertile up to a depth about 2 inches; beneath the fertile soil appears to be clay. The closer we get to the fence, it appears that the depth of the good soil decreases and then increases; it appears like the shape of a concave upward paraboloid.

Sharon finished weeding the Flowering Cherry bed and started to weed the Wisley Supreme Witch Hazel bed.

Reinstalled the manifold and the backflow and turned on, at the meter, the water for irrigation in the garden. 

Started to weed the Fern bed.

Sharon continued to weed the Flowering Cherry bed.

Gardening Diary – April 21, 2023

 Took the weeds, from yesterday, over to Dave’s gulley.

Completed weeding in the Daffodils bed. In addition, pruned the Sango Kaku Japanese Green Maple [Acer palmatum ‘Sango kaku’] and the Blue Cascade Evergreen Distylium [Distylium ‘PIIDIST-II’]. Both plants were hit very hard by the December freeze but there ae still signs of life in each of these.

Started weeding the street side of the Diane Witch Hazel and the Daffodils bed.

While weeding, pruned one of the Hydrangea plants in the Daffodils bed. Earlier, Sharon had pruned the other Hydrangea plant (Gardening Diary – March 10, 2023).

Sharon planted a Peach Jam Reblooming Bearded Iris in the front bulb bed. She received this Iris from LoriAnne as a Mother’s Day present.

Took the wagon, filled up with the weeds and the cuttings of the Pink Muhly Grass [Muhlenbergia capillaris] from the work that we did yesterday, over to Dave’s gulley and emptied it.

 Took the wagon over to Dave’s gulley and emptied the wagon.

Sharon pruned the 3 Sunny Knock Out Roses [Rosa ‘Radsunny’] in the front yard. She also weeded the bed containing them.

Gardening Diary – April 10, 2023

 Sharon and I severely pruned the Kaleidoscope Butterfly Bush [Buddleia davidii  ‘Bicolor’]. This bush was the only one of 4 Butterfly Bushes in the garden which did not show new growth.
