Gardening Diary - March 27, 2025

Finished pruning the False Asters [Kalimeris pinnatifida 'Hortensis'] and continued weeding the Daffodils bed.

Dave came over and unpacked part of the shipment from Home Depot yesterday:

Dave put the timbers and the stepping stones on the other side of the gate.

He took some of the bags of mulch over to his yard (I promised to get him 20 bags.)

Then Dave distributed most of the remaining bags of mulch over to most beds.

He and I then started spreading a little of the mulch.

Also cut back the False Asters. Recall that, on ???, Dave cut down back the False Asters to a height about 6 inches.

Removed, from the bed, the remains of the last Coleus planted last year.

Most of the weeds removed were Onions and Violets.

Home Depot delivered 100 bags of black wood shredded bagged mulch, 2 4"x4"x8' ground contact pressure-treated southern yellow pine timber and 3 16"x16"x1.75" Pewter Square Concrete Step Stones.

starting to weed. Most of the weeds were Onions and other weeds. However, in contrast to the beds weeded earlier this week, there were very few Violets.

Removed all but one of the remains of the Coleus.

Pruned to the ground, the 3 Raydon's Favorite Asters [Aster oblongifolius 'Raydon's Favorite'].

Gardening Diary – March 13, 2025

Moved on to the cleaning / weeding of the second of the circular beds on the right side of the front yard.

Similar to the past 2 days, removed the weeds, again, mostly Onions and Violets and the remnants of the Celosia plants. Left the remnant of Decadence® 'Vanilla Cream' False Indigo which was significantly larger than the similar plant in the first bed.

Also pruned the 3 Undaunted Muhly Grasses [Muhlenbergia reverchonii UNDAUNTED]. These plants seemed to be also larger than the similar plants in the first bed.

Gardening Diary – March 11, 2025

With a nice spell of weather predicted for this week, I ventured into the front yard and decided to weed one of the circular beds on the right side.

Two years ago, we had planted 3 Celosia plants in each of these circular beds. As the Celosias are annual plants, we decided last year to replace them with the perennials Muhly Grasses [Muhlenbergia reverchonil UNDAUNTED] (see April 25, 2024). Surprisingly, the Celosias had seeded themselves in both beds. Sharon and I were so pleased by the 2024 Celosias that we did not remove them.

Unfortunately, we did not care for the garden while I was disabled with my fall.

The Celosias had crowded out the Muhly Grasses.

Started weeding the circular bed shown in the picture above. In addition to removing the weeds, primarily Onions and Violets, I also started to remove the remnants of the Celosia. Pruned back one of the Muhly Grasses. Cleared about 1/3 of the bed since I had to take Sharon to an appointment.
